Lessons learnt in Seth Godin’s Purple Cow

Purple Cow is a marketing concept, which Seth Godin introduced in his book “Purple Cow”. The idea is to build things worth noticing right into your products or services.

The Purple Cow theory is Godin’s addition to the traditional five P’s of marketing — product, price, place, promotion and people.

And here’s what I learnt from the book -

1. Find things that are “just not done” in your industry, and do them.

2. Cater to niche customers, instead of the masses. Almost everything we can realistically imagine that we need, has been invented.

3. Create a remarkable product — the purple cow — that the right people seek out.

4. Connect with people who have otaku (an interest) for the product.

5. Design a product remarkable enough to attract the early adopters. Also, make it easy for them to sell the product persuasively to their peers.

6. A leader did something remarkable. And it’s no longer remarkable when you do it.

7. There’s no shortage of remarkable ideas. Have the will to execute.

8. Ideas that spread, Win!

9. Marketing today, is the act of inventing the product. The effort of designing it. The craft of producing it. The art of pricing it. The technique of selling it.

10. Milk your purple cow, once you have it, for everything it is worth.

11. Analyse what’s working fastest, and do it more. Figure out what’s not working, and kill it.

12. Bring in a new purple cow when the previous one is no longer purple.

Godin believes it is important to remember the importance of creating remarkable products, now, more than ever. And that’s why I believe…

“While everyone is busy building purple cows, build an orange panda.”
